mechanically separated chicken, beef hearts
pork, water, beef, modified food starch, salt...
oh my. and yuck. a food revolution indeed.
If you haven't been watching the Jamie Oliver show - Food Revolution - you should be. I thought that I was doing pretty well providing healthy meals and snacks for my family. Think again. The above ingredients were listed on the store brand salami that I purchased and fed to my kids. Ick. Never again.
I decided to roam the pantry and see what else we were eating. Shocking.
I am amazed at how many ingredients are listed on some things. Pop Tarts - over 35 ingredients? Why is that?
OK, I know, you probably don't let your kids eat Pop Tarts anyway. We, however, are under doctor's orders to add calories however we can. I am not typically a DingDong serving Mama but Jacob's nutritionist said to do whatever it takes - in the short run - to help him gain some weight.
Bologna. Jacob loves bologna. I don't even want to think about it.
And while we are on the subject, what about liquid creamer? What is that stuff?? Aren't those the same ingredients used to make plastic food containers? OK, maybe I exaggerate but only a little.
So, we are trying to give up liquid creamer. Not that easy, I'm afraid. We got hooked on it years ago at my grandparents' house. I think that we equated liquid creamer with high living LOL Aside from it not having one single ingredient that I can pronounce, it's expensive!
Why does that flavor only come from Coffeemate? Is one of those mystery ingredients a narcotic that makes you become addicted to it? Ack!!
I found an organic soy creamer at Trader Joe's that I actually do like. It's not terribly expensive and has fewer calories than Coffeemate. I recognize most of the ingredients. LaRue is trying out half and half. Surprisingly, it has about the same amount of calories as the liquid creamer. Unfortunately, he is using about four times as much to get his coffee creamy enough. Back to the drawing board for him. Maybe I can get him to go back to powdered creamer. What's in that stuff??
This is a process. A long process apparently.
I'm done for now. I'll keep you posted.

Audrey, if you want to get together and brainstorm I'd love to brainstorm with you through this. I've been working on cleaning up our diet since I was pregnant with Ezra. We now have a diet that consists of about 85% organic, and the rest all-natural. Its become sort of a passion for me to eat healthy and teach others to do so!
I am finding that eating red meat in any form leaves me breathless. LITERALLY! and since breathing is important to me I am going to have to cut those things out. good thing I like cheese pizzas. lol. We have been known to eat hot dogs now and again and do not subsist wholly on organic vegetables but we eat less and less from the store. I think if we had a cow I wouldnt even have to go to the store lol.
Yes I would! It's about time for another playdate, isn't it? FB me!
I would love to have a milk cow - If someone else would milk it! I remember my mom going out at 5am to milk every day. I can't really see myself doing that! A couple of chickens would be nice though...
Peanut butter...natural organic pb...lots of good fat in there..does Jacob like it?
bologna should be prohibited. UGH.
How about homeade mac and cheese?
And maybe you should just give up coffee altogether?
Okay, don't throw anything at me!
Please! :)
slinking away....
LOL We've started Alex on Instant Breakfast to up his calories too. I'm not happy about it because it has so much sugar and junk in it, but we've got to get more calories into this kid! :)
It is very exciting to see people excited about what they eat. Even simple things like reading the ingredient list, is HUGE. :) I would be happy to share sometime with you how we have been able to get Anya to gain weight and no I have never had a pop-tart in my house. :)
